Foley Artist John Roesch to Receive MPSE Career Achievement Award

The Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) have announced that veteran Foley artist John Roesch will be the recipient of its 2013 Career Achievement Award to be presented at the 60th MPSE Golden Reel Awards on February 17 in Los Angeles. Roesch has contributed to more than 400 films in an illustrious career spanning more than three decades. His credits include this past summer’s blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises as well as its predecessor The Dark Knight, its predecessor The Dark Knight, all three films in the Matrix trilogy and Inception.

“John Roesch is an outstanding craftsman,” said MPSE president Bobbi Banks. “As a Foley artist, John’s art is so subtle that movie-goers may not recognize it, and yet it is an essential element in creating the environment, atmosphere and mood of films. Even after 30 years, he continues to innovate and push the boundaries of his craft. The MPSE takes great pride in saluting his work and career.” Roesch is the first Foley artist to receive the MPSE Career Achievement Award. He is one of the most accomplished Foley artists in the motion picture industry. He is the recipient of two MPSE Golden Reel Awards (The Dark Knight, The Matrix) alongside more than a dozen nominations. He has worked on 16 films that have won Academy Awards for Best Sound or Best Sound Editing.

Roesch studied filmmaking at New York University and was a Directing Fellow at the American Film Institute. While at AFI, he discovered his passion for Foley, something that continues to drive him to this day. He is a member of Local 700, Motion Picture Sound Editors, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He credits much of his success to other crafts people he has worked with through the years.

A blue sky sprawls between ridges frosted in deep evergreen, framing Alder Gulch much as when Native American tribes traversed this landscape 800 years ago. The town of Virginia City sprang up virtually overnight in the summer of 1863; within one year, it was the largest city in the Inland Northwest, with an estimated 10,000 residents. These days, few people continue seeking gold in Alder Gulch. But for filmmakers seeking ready-made Old West locations, the towns of Virginia City and Nevada City offer one more chance to strike it rich.
